So is this phone just a camera, or is it capable of pushing the boundaries of mobile phones even further?

Sony Ericsson have created some of the best selling handsets in recent years, probably best of all was the K750i, loved worldwide for its 2 mega pixel camera, appearance and advanced features. Sony expanded on that phone with models such as the W800 and W810i until they had the music market covered. Now it’s their turn to claim the camera side of the mobile phone market.

Featuring the iconic CyberShot brand, the Sony Ericsson K800i has a camera that is simply extraordinary. Never before has anything like this been seen on a mobile phone. Although Nokia were the first to break the 3 megapixel barrier with the N80, the camera quality wasn’t quite as good as Sony’s effort. With the inclusion of BestPic, users are guaranteed the best quality photo every time.

BestPic is an amazing feature which takes nine individual shots every time the capture button is pressed. This means that you now have a choice of nine photos you can save, so if you find that one or two of the images are blurred through slight movements you simply discard them and save as many of the rest as you like. Also, with an image stabilizer and Xenon flash included too, there’s no excuse not to get a perfect photo every time. The phone also has 64MB of onboard memory, meaning that there is loads of room to house your high-quality snaps. If this wasn’t enough, you can also blog from the handset using blogger.com. The phone has an extra option under ‘send’ which enables you to effortlessly create a blog from scratch and update it on the move.

Inevitably the phone does end up being a bit of a one-trick pony, however with such a fantastic feature on board Sony were hardly going to go overboard with cutting-edge features.

The multimedia player on the handset is just the same as that on a Sony Walkman phone, although the purchase of an M2 card is essential if you want to store audio, video and images. This means that users upgrading from the earlier K750i, W800i or W810i won’t be able to use their memory cards in this handset as they all supported Sony’s other memory card. Seeing as this is the only current handset supporting M2, it does seem a bit strange why Sony have included the new format on this handset – especially since the newer W850i uses the Memory Stick Pro Duo.

Videos on the K800i are displayed magnificently alongside your 3.2 mega pixel photos, with a 2” TFT screen on the handset. This does mean that the handset is a bit bulkier than earlier ones, with the screen alone taking up half of the phone. Measuring at 105 x 47 x 22 mm, it definitely isn’t the smallest handset; however we can forgive Sony because it still manages to look attractive. With a weight of 115g we do have a phone which is easy to carry and doesn’t feel overly heavy. The inclusion of 3G means that the handset was never going to be the slimmest on the market. However with a 7 hour talk time the phone is, like most Sony Ericsson phones, going to last a very long time between charges.

Out now, and winner of the Mobile News ‘handset of the year’ award for 2006, the Sony Ericsson K800i is a fantastic camera phone worthy of your full attention. The phone has also been released in silver on some networks to support the upcoming Bond film Casino Royale, so it looks set to be around for some time to come.

3G Network to Showcase Groove Mobile's Innovative Features

US / Europe : Groove Mobile and 3UK said they are joining forces to power an innovative mobile music service on 3UK's network. With today's announcement, Groove Mobile will bring its award-winning music service and innovative features to 3UK's leading 3G network, which is currently number one in the UK mobile music download market.

Inset shows the Groove Mobile Music Player.

3UK's Marketing Director, Graeme Oxby says "3UK's mobile music service powered by Groove Mobile will enable our customers to download music simultaneously from their phone to their PC and vice versa. It will bring online music purchasing for both home and mobile into one seamless experience. Once again this will demonstrate 3's leadership in this market and give a fabulous experience for our customers."

In addition to providing full-track music downloads direct to mobile handsets, the new music service will include access to multiple charts, downloading high quality album art, shop and play, browsing and previews, and exclusive content. The music service will allow customers who purchase music over the air to get their track delivered to their handset, and get a copy of their track online. They can then play it on their laptop or PC, transfer it onto an MP3 player, or burn it onto a CD. They can also purchase the track on their PC (via three.co.uk) and then download, it free of charge, to their mobile. Also, in the event that a customer loses/ deletes a track, they are able to re-download the track up to 3 times, free of charge.

Groove Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Adam Sexton said, "Our technology supports 3UK's award winning mobile music service and is another example of the leadership of our mobile music service around the world. Groove Mobile's enhanced functionality with 3UK represents another exciting step in the UK mobile music market."

Groove Mobile also powers the award winning Sprint Music Store, the first over-the-air full-track download service to launch in the United States. Last year in the UK, Groove Mobile-powered music services received top ratings from mobile music customers in What Now magazine and from independent analysts at Strategy Analytics, an industry research firm.

Sanyo Xacti VPC-C6E digital camcorder

The current crop of ultra-compact digital still cameras can all shoot video clips. Sanyo’s Xacti VPC-C6E is about the same size as most pocket digicams and can shoot both video and stills, but here the primary emphasis is on shooting video with a solid stills capability.

Designed to be held upright in one hand, the Xacti body houses a flipout 2in LCD; this also serves as a switch to take the camera in and out of standby mode.

Upon opening the screen, the camera is ready to shoot in well under two seconds.

In its default configuration an enthusiastic female voice greets you with helpful hints on how to get started. Thankfully, this can be turned off once she’s outgrown her usefulness.

All camera controls have been placed to fall conveniently under the thumb: individual buttons activate video recording and shoot stills and a zoom slider sits between them.

With the Sanyo Xacti CPV-C6E there’s no need to stop filming to take a still image, you can just take a still shot whenever you want without interrupting the video recording.

Unlike it’s bigger brother, the Xacti VPC-HD1E, this model isn’t able to record high-definition video.

Instead, the maximum resolution sits at 640 x 480 at 30fps (frames per second) - the same as that offered by most digicams and you can fit an hour of footage on the supplied 1GB card in High Quality mode. This matches up well with a 60-minute battery life.

Unlike some digital camcorders, where still images are of low-resolution and almost an afterthought, the VPC-C6E offers full 6megapixel resolution images with a selection of stills shooting modes and a built-in flash.

With image quality comparable to a decent digital camera, you certainly won’t need to carry a separate camera.

A docking station provides easy PC and TV connectivity so you can dump your recordings directly onto video tape or a DVD-recorder, or copy your recorded mpeg4 files and jpegs directly to your PC for editing with the supplied software.

With high-quality video and photos, the VPC-6CE is an impressive piece of kit.

2 New NEC TV Mobile Phones

ASIA : Further to NEC introducing the V601N TV Mobile Phone last year, with its ability to capture still pictures and animation from TV broadcasts More here ...

NEC has introduced 2 new TV mobile phones. According to a recent survey conducted by SCRI International, Inc., more than 40% of broadcast and production facilities around the world have already purchased and/or expect to purchase HDTV production/broadcast equipment by the year 2000.

But what about the other 60%? Roughly half of those, or 33% of the total, answered "unsure." As a result, if some of them come on board (as the report predicts), the number of convertees in the next two years could exceed 50%. Fewer than 4% answered that they will never convert.

The results are part of the 1998 Mid-Year Industry Trends Report, which tracks broadcast and production engineers worldwide. Close to 79% of the responses were from the US, with around 12% from Europe and 8% from Asia. The results are broken down by industry: 28% from the TV/cable companies, 45% from video/film production/post houses, and the rest from other areas of the industry.

In other HDTV news, the possibility of special fees (around $10-$12/month) for HDTV viewers was raised by an article in the Washington Post last week. According to the story, broadcast executives from the major networks are talking with Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) about these fees in an effort to pay for the extra bandwidth needed by the HDTV format.

Noting that the majority of TV viewers access programs via cable, the networks are hesitant to broadcast HDTV content over the air only to have it largely ignored. As a result, they are trying to negotiate deals with companies like TCI to provide HDTV signals along with "regular" channels via the cable systems.

Congress gave the networks large slices of free bandwidth to begin broadcasting digital signals by the end of this year. According to Ken Johnson, a spokesman for Rep. W.J. "Billy" Tauzin, chairman of the House Telecommunications Subcommittee, "It wasn't the intent of Congress to give away the spectrum for HDTV, only to have consumers charged for the privilege of watching it."

On the other hand, cable companies will likely have to bump several channels in order to add HDTV to their service, which is why they want to charge customers who use it. Gigi Sohn of the Media Access Project asks, "Should cable operators have to carry two signals [the existing signal plus the digital one]? My take in the early years is no, certainly not if it means bumping C-SPAN off the cable system."

Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile Technology

Toshiba notebooks based on Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile Technology provide the performance, flexibility and freedom to work, have fun and communicate where you need to with increased capabilities at home or on the go.

Enables great battery life
Expanded wireless connectivity
Enhanced entertainment performance
Find Out More
Tecra M5

Latest Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile Technology
Ideal business platform – long lifecycle with stable image
Perfect ultra light work companion – 14" display at only 2.3kgs
Unique Toshiba EasyGuard Features – Improved Security, Protection and Connectivity
Simple Dockable Platform
£1,299 Find Out More

Samsung’s HD Widescreen Phone

That’s right, another Asia-only phone has been announced simply to piss us all off. But in the corporate enterprise communications arena, HD has been a hard sell until recently. After all, large standard-definition screens have been commonplace for so long in corporate boardrooms, training centers, digital signage installations, and even lobby displays that we have all become accustomed to them. Presentations needing really fine detail have usually been shown on computer-generated VGA screens (at least since IBM introduced the Video Graphics Array resolution standard in 1987).
Now that SXGA resolutions of 1280×1024 and higher are readily available on even modestly priced laptops, most designers and technicians already work with data-dense screen displays. More importantly, since standard-definition video infrastructure already exists, why should a corporation make the upgrade? The broadcast networks were forced to take the plunge into digital transmission by FCC mandate, but until recently corporations had been facing massive capital outlays if they wanted to catch up.

With recent developments in codecs, disk and hard drive storage, and digital signage systems, however, all that is changing. This Technology Trends article looks at some of the new technologies that will soon enable HD to spread its gloriously dense images and crystal-clear audio throughout corporate America, educational institutions, houses of worship, and anywhere people need to see what only high-definition pictures — and their associated multichannel digital audio — can convey.

Panasonic TH- 58PX600U and TH-58PX60U

Everyone wants a plasma unless they're into LCD or they've got the greens for home cinema.
